USB-C PD and fast charging power banks explained

Updated 2026-10-18

Fast charging is full of acronyms: PD, QC, PPS, SCP. This guide explains what actually matters when you pick a fast-charging power bank, and how to avoid paying for speed you cannot use.

What is USB-C PD?

USB Power Delivery (PD) is the open standard that lets a USB-C port negotiate higher voltage and current with the device. It is used by iPhones, most modern Androids, tablets and laptops. A PD port with 20W or more fast-charges most phones.

Watts: how much do you need?

Phones are usually happy with 20W to 30W. Tablets prefer 30W to 45W. Thin laptops need 45W to 65W and larger laptops can need 100W. More watts than your device accepts does not make it faster, it just gives headroom.

QC, PPS, SCP and VOOC

Some phone makers use their own fast-charge protocols. A power bank listing that names QC, PPS or a brand protocol may charge that phone faster, but PD remains the common language. If you have a specific phone, check its supported protocol.

The cable matters

A cheap cable can limit the power. For 60W and above, use a USB-C cable rated for that power, and for 100W look for a cable that explicitly supports it.

Two ports, shared power

Many power banks split the output when two ports are used. A 45W unit may give only 20W to each port when both are in use, so check the per-port table.

Frequently asked questions常見問題

Is 22.5W fast charging?

It is moderately fast and fine for many phones. For quicker charging, look for 30W or more with PD.

Will a 65W power bank damage my phone?

No. The phone only draws what it accepts.

Do I need a special cable for fast charging?

Use a good USB-C cable. For 60W and above it should be rated for that power.
