Planning a trip? The rules for taking a power bank on a plane are strict, because lithium batteries can overheat. This guide covers the basics for flights from Hong Kong, but airline rules change, so always check your airline's current policy before you fly.
搭飛機前 check one more time: the label, the Wh rating and your carrier's rules.
Hand luggage only
Power banks must go in carry-on luggage, never in checked baggage. If you are asked to check a bag at the gate, take the power bank out first. Keep it where you can reach it, not buried at the bottom of a backpack.
The 100Wh rule
Most airlines allow power banks up to 100Wh without approval. Calculate Wh as mAh x 3.7 / 1000. A 20,000 mAh unit is about 74Wh and fine. A 27,000 mAh unit is about 100Wh, right at the limit. Units between 100Wh and 160Wh usually need airline approval and are limited in number, and above 160Wh they are not allowed.
Using it during the flight
Many airlines now restrict or ban using a power bank to charge devices in flight, or ask you to keep it visible and not charge it from the seat. Rules vary by carrier, so check before you fly rather than assuming.
Flights in mainland China
Some flights within mainland China require power banks to carry a 3C mark and may refuse units without it. If you are flying to or within mainland China, check the airline and airport notice, and bring a power bank with clear labelling.
Label and condition
Keep the label legible so staff can read the rating. Do not travel with a damaged, swollen or recalled power bank. Put a cap or tape over the ports, or use a pouch, to avoid short circuits.
Quick checklist
Hand luggage only. Under 100Wh. Label readable. Not damaged. Airline in-flight rules checked. Mainland 3C requirement checked if relevant.
